Creatine Monohydrate vs HCl vs Creapure vs Kre-Alkalyn: Which Form Is Worth Paying For?

If you want the short answer: creatine monohydrate is the right choice for almost everyone, and the premium forms mostly solve problems that monohydrate does not actually have. But "mostly" is not "always", and the tubs sitting next to each other on the shelf are genuinely different products with genuinely different maths on the back. This is what each one is, and how to work out whether the extra money buys you anything.
One thing to fix in your head before anything else, because it settles most of the argument: in Great Britain there is a single authorised health claim for creatine, and it is "creatine increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high intensity exercise". It applies to adults doing high-intensity exercise, and the authorised condition is a daily intake of 3 g of creatine. Note what that claim attaches to. Not monohydrate, not hydrochloride, not a trademark — creatine, measured in grams. Everything below is really just a question of how many grams of actual creatine you are getting, and what you paid for them.
Creatine monohydrate
Monohydrate is creatine with a single water molecule attached, which is how the raw material is manufactured and stabilised. It is the form used in the overwhelming majority of published research, it is the cheapest per gram by a wide margin, and it is what you should buy unless you have a specific reason not to.
Work it from the molecular weights and a monohydrate powder is about 88% creatine by mass — so a 5 g scoop delivers roughly 4.4 g of creatine, comfortably over the 3 g the authorised claim is built on. That is why the standard 3–5 g scoop exists.
You will see the word micronised on a lot of tubs. It means the powder has been milled to a smaller particle size, which makes it mix and settle better in water. Creapure
Here is the thing most people miss: Creapure is creatine monohydrate. It is a brand name for monohydrate produced to a particular manufacturing specification, and the reason it commands a premium is purity and consistency of the raw material, not a different molecule or a different dose.
So the honest framing is this. If you like knowing exactly where your raw material came from and you are willing to pay for that assurance, Creapure-branded monohydrate such as Olimp Creatine Monohydrate Creapure or the capsule version, Reflex Nutrition Creapure Caps, is a perfectly rational purchase. What you should not do is treat it as a stronger or more effective form. Gram for gram of creatine, it is the same compound as the tub next to it.
Creatine hydrochloride (HCl)
Creatine HCl is creatine bound to hydrochloric acid as a salt. Its selling point is solubility: it dissolves far more readily in a small volume of water than monohydrate does, which is why HCl products are sold in much smaller serving sizes and in tiny scoops.
The trade-off is arithmetic. Because the hydrochloride portion is heavier than the water molecule in monohydrate, a gram of creatine HCl powder is a smaller fraction of actual creatine — roughly 78% on the molecular weights, versus about 88% for monohydrate. So a 1 g serving of HCl is a little under 0.8 g of creatine. Against a 3 g daily target, that matters, and it is worth checking the label rather than assuming a small scoop is a clever scoop.
Where HCl genuinely earns its place is comfort and convenience. Some people find large monohydrate servings sit heavily, or dislike the gritty residue at the bottom of the glass, and a smaller, fully dissolved drink is easier to stick with — and adherence beats optimisation every time. Buffered creatine ("Kre-Alkalyn")
Buffered creatine is monohydrate with an alkaline agent added to raise the pH of the powder. The marketing rationale is that less creatine converts to creatinine before it is absorbed, and that a smaller dose is therefore sufficient. Treat that as a manufacturer's rationale rather than an established fact — the authorised GB claim is still written around 3 g of creatine a day, and nothing about a buffering agent changes the wording of that claim.
Practically, this is the category where you most need to read the back of the pack. Buffered products are usually sold as capsules at a few hundred milligrams to a couple of grams each, so the number of capsules needed to reach 3 g of creatine can be higher than the front of the tub implies. The other forms you will see
A few more turn up on labels, usually as part of a blend rather than on their own:
- Creatine ethyl ester — an older "enhanced absorption" form that never developed the research base monohydrate has.
- Creatine nitrate — creatine bound to a nitrate group, generally found inside pre-workouts rather than sold as a standalone creatine.
- Creatine magnesium chelate — creatine bound with magnesium, again mostly a blend ingredient.
- Blends such as Applied Nutrition Creatine + Peptide, which combine forms. Blends are fine, but they make the "grams of creatine per serving" figure harder to find, so look for it.
Form is not the same as format
Worth separating two things that get muddled. Form is the chemistry — monohydrate, HCl, buffered. Format is the delivery — powder, capsule, tablet, gummy, sachet. They are independent: you can buy monohydrate as a powder, a tablet or a gummy, and each of those will cost a different amount per gram.

How to compare them on one scale
Every form becomes comparable if you convert everything to cost per 3 g of creatine, which is the daily amount the authorised claim is built around. The method:
- Find the grams of creatine per serving on the nutrition panel — not the serving weight, the creatine content.
- Divide 3 by that number to get the servings needed per day.
- Divide the servings in the pack by the servings per day. That is how many days the pack lasts.
- Divide the price by the days. That is your true daily cost.
Run this once across a monohydrate tub, an HCl tub and a buffered capsule product and the ranking rarely surprises anyone twice.
So which should you buy?
Monohydrate, unless you have tried it and genuinely disliked it. It is the most studied form, the cheapest per gram of creatine, and it is what the authorised claim was written around.
Creapure-branded monohydrate if raw-material provenance matters to you and you accept you are paying for a specification rather than a stronger product.
HCl if large monohydrate servings do not suit you and a small, fully dissolved drink is the difference between taking it daily and not.
Buffered capsules if you want a counted capsule and you have checked the creatine per capsule against a 3 g target and are happy with the daily cost.
