Do You Need a Post-Workout Shake?

The post-workout shake is a gym classic — but do you actually need one? Here's a balanced, no-hype look.

Why people have one

A shake after training is a convenient way to get protein in when you might not fancy a full meal, and it's easy to carry to the gym. For many, that convenience is the real benefit.

The “anabolic window”

You may have heard you must get protein in within 30 minutes of training. Current thinking is more relaxed: what matters most is hitting your total protein across the whole day, rather than racing the clock.

So, essential or optional?

If you eat a protein-rich meal within a couple of hours of training, a shake isn't essential. But it remains a genuinely handy option if a meal is a while away or you're short on time.
