Electrolytes & Hydration Explained
Share
You've seen electrolyte tablets and hydration powders everywhere — but what are they actually for? Here's a simple guide to staying hydrated around training.
What are electrolytes?
Electrolytes are minerals — such as sodium, potassium and magnesium — that your body contains and loses some of through sweat, which is why they come up so often in the context of exercise. Magnesium, for example, contributes to normal muscle function and to electrolyte balance as part of a varied, balanced diet.
Why hydration matters when you train
Even everyday training makes you sweat, and you lose fluid and some electrolytes as you do. For most short workouts, water is enough to stay topped up. For longer, sweatier sessions — or hot days — an electrolyte drink can help replace some of what you lose in sweat.
Powders, tablets or drinks?
- Tablets — drop into a bottle of water; handy and low-calorie.
- Powders — easy to scale to your session and often flavour-packed.
- Ready-to-drink — grab-and-go convenience for training or travel.

Food supplements are not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle, and should not be used to prevent or treat any illness. Always read the product label, do your own research, and speak to a qualified doctor, pharmacist or registered nutritionist before starting a new supplement — especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, taking medication or managing a health condition.
