Carbohydrates

Carbohydrate powders and fuel sources — maltodextrin, dextrose, cyclic dextrin, waxy maize, cream of rice, oat powders and carb-electrolyte blends.

These are bought to add calories and fuel around training without eating a full meal. The differences are mainly texture and how quickly they mix and settle: dextrose and maltodextrin are cheap and dissolve readily, cluster and cyclic dextrins mix thinner and sit lighter, and cream of rice and oat powders behave like food and are eaten as a bowl rather than drunk. Unflavoured versions can be added straight into a shake from protein powders. For long sessions see endurance & energy and energy gels, for combined recovery formulas see post-workout, and for eating rather than drinking see foods & flavourings.
